Your next chapter in oils. 7 useful tips for wherever you are in your oil painting journey!
Oil colour... Water cleanup?

Yes, really. Water-mixable oils are true oil paint, made to thin and wash up with water.

No turpentine needed
★ Water-mixable oils blend and layer just like traditional oils. You can use them with the oils you already have, so there's no need to replace your collection, and Mont Marte H2O even mixes with acrylic and gouache!
Get more colours from less tubes...

A handful of tubes can open up dozens of colours. Try it with your set:

1
Pick four or five tubes.
2
Mix two of them together in different amounts: more of one, then more of the other.
3
Paint something small using only those mixes.
Keep your mixes clear.

Old paint creeping into a new mix is what turns colours muddy. Two habits keep them bright:

Draw with paint

Oil sticks are oil paint with a little wax added, shaped into a stick. Draw and layer straight onto your surface.

★ Each stick grows a thin skin that keeps the paint fresh. Peel it off the tip, then draw.
★ Work on canvas, panels or paper prepared for oils, with the sticks alone or alongside your oil paints and mediums.
★ They are touch-dry within a few days, though a finished piece needs six months before you varnish it.
Create more depth.

Glazing means brushing thin, see-through colour over dry paint, so the layer below glows through.

1
Wait until the painted area is touch-dry.
2
Thin a little transparent colour with linseed oil.
3
Brush it on in one smooth layer, and let it dry before you add another.
Change how your paint looks & feels.

Mix a medium (an oil, gel or wax) into your paint to change how it flows, dries and finishes.

Tint your colours.

Tinting means mixing a colour with white. A tint chart shows how strong each colour is, so you know how much to use in a mix.

1
Mix each colour with an equal amount of white.
2
Paint a small labelled swatch of each mix.
3
Keep the chart beside your palette.
