Six soft round pastels work through the cool colours, from strong pigment to pale, very tinted lights. Skies, seas and distant hills can be built in steps, right on the paper.

  • Pastels: 6 soft round sticks, 70 x 12mm, the standard Art Spectrum size
  • Range: pure pigment (P) through to very tinted (V)
  • Colours: Ultramarine Blue P (526P), Flinders Blue Violet V (520V), Jacaranda P (522P), Spectrum Blue T (524T), Flinders Blue Violet P (520P) and Indigo V (534V)
  • Making: hand made with lightfast pigments, maximum pigment and minimal binder, triple milled for a velvety stroke
  • Collect: one of 14 six packs, none sharing a colour with another

Staff tip

Put violet in your shadows instead of black. Start the shadow with Flinders Blue Violet, then soften it with a gentle pass of whatever colour the object is, and shadows stay lively rather than dull. The same trick suits skin, leaves and white cloth.

Sweep the side of the stick across the top of a sky for the darkest tone, easing to lighter strokes near the horizon. Colour selections may vary, as Art Spectrum points out.
