  • A smooth sheet or mixed media pad works well, and lightly textured paper picks up more colour for layering
  • Keep them flat or tip-up when stored, and avoid drops, since a hard knock can crack the core inside the wood
  • Sharpen gently and turn the pencil for a clean point

Staff tip

For a rose, work from the centre outwards. Press firmly for the deep red centre and go lighter on the outer petals to add depth.
