Staff tip
Paint hardens right beside the ferrule, where the bristles meet the handle, so clean brushes before they travel. Wipe away extra paint, then wash in soap and water, starting with solvent if you paint in oils. Shape the bristles back and let each brush dry before it goes in.
Pack the largest brush at the back, bring a rag and some brush soap, and the day out is sorted. Keep the brushes you rely on apart from the older ones used for gesso and glue, because every painter has both.
