Directions

Surface Preparation:

Always size absorbent surfaces like canvas or paper before applying the ground. Use Gamblin PVA Size, acrylic size, rabbit skin glue, or acrylic primer.

Wooden supports do not require sizing.

Application:

Apply the first coat thinly and allow it to become touch-dry (usually overnight).

Apply a second, even coat once the first is dry.

Allow the surface to cure for five days before beginning your oil painting.

For a smoother finish, additional coats can be applied.

Gamblin Oil Painting Ground creates a strong, bright, non-absorbent foundation for oil painting, enhancing the surface with excellent opacity and tooth. Made from alkyd resin, titanium dioxide and barium sulfate, it stiffens canvas and linen more than acrylic gesso while remaining more flexible and faster-drying than traditional lead/linseed oil primers. Only two coats are needed for effective coverage, making it a time-saving and artist-friendly alternative to acrylic gesso or traditional grounds.
