Earth tones do the quiet work in most landscapes and portraits. This six pack gives you a light to dark run of ochres, siennas and umbers, crafted by hand from artist grade pastel.
Features
- Pastels: 6 full size soft round sticks, 70 x 12mm, good for side strokes
- Range: from Yellow Ochre down to Burnt Umber, spanning pale through deep earths
- Colours: Yellow Ochre P (540P), Caput Mortuum T (554T), Raw Sienna P (544P), Burnt Sienna N (548N), Greenish Umber N (579N) and Burnt Umber D (552D)
- Grades: D darkest, then N dark, P pure and T tinted
- Useful shades: Greenish Umber suits gum leaves in shadow and olive skin tones, while the siennas and Caput Mortuum T help with portrait shading
Staff tip
Tone the paper first. Lay down Raw Sienna with the side of the stick, then blend it into the sheet with a tissue. A warm middle tone underneath means lights and darks both stand out, and the paper never looks stark white.
Work from dark to light: start with the deep shades, Burnt Umber and Greenish Umber, move into the siennas, then finish with Yellow Ochre where the light hits.
