Staff tip
Narrow your eyes before each mark and ask whether the area sits lighter or darker than the one beside it. Six values leave little choice, which pushes you to simplify, and simple value shapes are what carry a drawing across a room.
Cool greys suit shadows under a bright sky, while warm greys cover the ground bounce, so a monochrome piece picks up a sense of temperature. Choose a mid toned or black sheet so the pale and dark greys both have room, then block the big shadows and keep Titanium White for the final highlights. A kneadable eraser lifts mistakes from charcoal if you sketch underneath first.
