- 12 Prismacolor Premier Soft Core pencils, dry and wax based
- Blues for sky, haze and storms: Cloud Blue, Light Cerulean Blue and Indigo Blue
- Greens for grass, gum leaves and distant trees: Sap Green Light, Olive Green and Peacock Green
- Warm tones for soil, sunsets and dry grass: Tuscan Red, Pumpkin Orange and Goldenrod
- Browns and black for trunks, paths and crisp darks: Chestnut, Light Umber and Black
- Soft cores need little pressure and blend or layer to a painterly finish
- Works on sketch paper, Bristol board and toned or mixed media stock
Staff tip
Sketch the sky before the foreground. Cooler, paler tones such as Cloud Blue push hills into the distance, and Chestnut and Black belong to the close-up detail.
Start with the largest areas, sky, hills and foreground, then layer lighter to darker, moving from distance toward you. The set is light to carry on a walk, so take a small sketchbook and sharpener too.
